In December, the Linden Community School Board approved a change in the Advanced American Literature curriculum that allowed students to participate in the 2020 Great Michigan Read by adding the Book What the Eyes Don't See by Mona Hanna-Attish as a pilot replacement for Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms. Dr. George is excited to give students an issue that is both current and local to inspire topics for research papers required in the curriculum.
The books, written by the Hurley Medical Center pediatrician on the front line of the crisis, were obtained through a grant application submitted by Mrs. Kissel, Media Assistant, to the Michigan Humanities Council. The grant included copies of the book for each student along with readers' guides that include a timeline of the Flint water crisis.
In addition to cross-curricular discussions with Mr. Cox (Biology), Mr. Bodzick (Government), and Mr. Schneider (Sociology) the students are looking forward to a visit from Dr. Mona in March.
The 2019-20 Great Michigan Read is presented by Michigan Humanities and supported by national, statewide, and local partners, including the National Endowment for the Humanities and The Meijer Foundation.
